Erskine wins shootout; advances to Championship Game

Box Score Due West, S.C. – After finishing regulation and two overtime periods tied at 1-1, #1 Erskine prevailed in a shootout over #5 Pfeiffer 5-4 to advance to the Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship Game this Sunday.

Pfeiffer tallied the game's first goal in the opening period off a corner kick. Standing on the backside, Luke Janes blasted the ball just inside the far post to put Pfeiffer up 1-0.

In the second period, Erskine's Andrew Settlemire (Beaufort, SC, Beaufort High School) lofted a beautiful pass across the face of the goal that teammate Victor Nirennold redirected back across into the near corner to tie the game at 1-1.

In the shootout, Pfeiffer gained the early advantage when goalkeeper Nicolas Dulac stopped Jack Power's attempt. But Erskine goalkeeper Roberto De La Vina (Oviedo, Spain, San Ignacio) stopped Seth Day's ensuing attempt and Erskine's Luke Boyce (Lincoln, England, Bungay High) converted his attempt to tie the shootout at 3 each. After both teams converted on their fifth attempt, De La Vina blocked Corey Davis' attempt wide of the goal giving Settlemire the opportunity to win the game. Settlemire, who was recently voted Conference Carolinas Player of the Year, blasted home the game-winner.

Defensively both teams kept the other from getting many quality shots. Erskine attempted 30 shots but could only place 11 on goal. Likewise, Pfeiffer launched 21 attempts but only 8 were on the mark.

De La Vina made two outstanding saves, including a one-on-one to preserve the tie game. De La Vina finished the night with 7 saves after facing 21 shots. His counterpart, Nicholas Dulac, had 10 saves on 30 shots.

Erskine will host #2 Limestone College, who defeated #3 Barton 2-1 in the other bracket, Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Huggins Field. There is no admission charge to the event.
