Box Score Due West, S.C. – In just their second season of competition the Erskine Flying Fleet (21-6, 12-2) defeated the University of Mount Olive Trojans (15-12, 10-4) in straight sets 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, and 27-25) to win their first Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Volleyball Tournament.
After cruising to a 25 to 20 win in the first set, Erskine fought off three match points to win the last two sets. In the first set, Erskine broke a 5-5 tie with back-to-back kills by
Roberto Perez Vargas (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy) and
Corey Marks (Southwest Ranches, FL, Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School) and the Fleet never trailed again in the set. Sophomore
Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) led the Fleet with 6 kills in the set.
With the game tied at 23 to 23, Mount Olive's Quaid Marin knocked down a kill for their first game point. Following an Erskine timeout, Erskine turned to their leading hitter Michelau, who scored the Fleet's next three points for the win. Michelau drilled back-to-back kills on assists from Marks then displayed his defensive skills by stuffing Steven Cruse's attack attempt for the game point.
Erskine again was able to score points at crucial points in the third set. Twice Mount Olive had game point but failed to capitalize on the opportunities. After a kill by
Omar Melendez (San Juan, P.R., Colegio San Ignalio) tied the game at 25 to 25, Mount Olive committed back-to-back errors to give Erskine the 27 to 25 victory.
Michelau led the Flying Fleet with 14 kills, 8 digs, and 4 service aces in earning the tournament's Most Valuable Player Award. Melendez had another efficient outing, knocking down 9 kills on just 15 attempts along with two service aces and a block.
Angel Dache led the Trojans with 18 kills while Cruse contributed 11 kills.
Marks and Melendez were named to the All-Tournament for the Flying Fleet while Dache and Cruse earned the honors for the Trojans.
Barton's Micheal McMahon and Pfeiffer's Sonny Hirini also earned All-Tournament honors.
