Box Score Misenheimer, N.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (21-6) fought off a tough University of Mount Olive (15-11) squad to win 3 to 2 (26-28, 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 15-12) in the semi-final round of the Conference Carolinas Men's Volleyball Championship Tournament hosted by Pfeiffer University at Merner Gym.
For the Fleet, the victory boiled down to their defensive effort. In the two sets UMO won, the Trojans were able to hit over .300. In the three other sets, the Fleet held the Trojans well below .300. For the match, Erskine hit .301 compared to UMO's .261 hitting percentage.
Junior
Mike Michelau (Trevor, WI, Westosha Central High School) smashed a game-high 27 kills in the win. Fellow junior
Omar Melendez (San Juan, P.R., Colegio San Ignalio de Loyola) knocked down 16 kills, just one kill away from tying a career-high.
Mike Kawa (Debica, Poland, Elk Grove High School), who missed the last portion of the season due to illness, also provided a boost with 14 kills and 7 digs. Sophomore
Roberto Perez Vargas (Dorado, P.R., Bayamon Military Academy) turned in a rare double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs.
For the Trojans, they had a pair of hitters finish with 16 kills each. Andrew Sydow knocked down 16 kills without committing an error on 24 attempts while teammate Peyton Schirman had 16 kills on 38 attempts.
Erskine advances to face the conference regular season champion and #1 seed Pfeiffer University in the championship game on Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m. The Pfeiffer University Sports Information Department will be providing both
