Erskine (6-3,5-0) extended its match win streak to five in a row on Wednesday evening when it downed conference opponent, Limestone (4-5,3-4) with a 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16) final in Belk Arena.
"It was a good team effort tonight," Erskine men's head coach Cole Tallman said. The first and third set was a lot of back and forth, but it was the balanced effort and offensive contributions from Roberto Perez Vargas, Mike Michelau and Omar Melendez with 20 kills, 15 kills and 11 kills respectively that kept the fleet ahead when the sets were close.
The second set was very close, but Limestone came out on top with solid offense from junior outside hitter, Bruno Kretzschmar. Key defensive plays from junior middle blocker, Dylan Lavener helped the Saints slow down the Fleet offense. The momentum shifted in the 4th and final set for the Fleet. They started out strong and ended strong while keeping almost a nine point lead throughout the entire set.
This was another stellar night for Senior libero, Michael Schneck who contributed 16 digs. Setter, David Grandy did a nice job spreading the ball around and ended the match with 54 assists and added 6 digs. Another highlight of the match came from Junior opposite, Andres Talavera who stepped up for the Fleet adding 6 kills and 5 digs.
Coach Tallman ended the night by saying, "Since we started this year we have been focused on the saying 'opinions are what others think of you, but results are what you think of yourself.'" "Tonight's match allowed us to confirm that challenge and outcome."
The Fleet return to action Tuesday, February 23rd at home versus conference opponent, Belmont Abbey. Game time is set for 7pm.
