The Beville Cup (originally known as the Anderson/Erskine Cup) is a competition between Erskine College and Anderson University athletics programs. The Cup was established in the fall of 2003 in hopes of furthering the rivalry between the two institutions situated only by 20 miles. The winner of the Beville Cup each year has the Cup presented each spring to its student-athletes and coaches by the losing athletics director.
Anderson University won the inaugural Cup in 2004 before Erskine captured the Cup in 2005 and 2006. The Cup was returned to Anderson in 2007 and the Trojans retained the Cup in 2008, but Erskine returned it to Due West in 2009. Anderson won the Cup back in 2010, winning 20-18 in the closest competion yet. The format changed in 2010-2011 because of Anderson's departure from Conference Carolinas, but the Beville Cup lived on as Anderson won in a thriller capturing 10.5 points to Erskine's 9 points. The highlight of the Beville Cup came in 2012 when Erskine regained the Cup with a 40 foot putt in golf. Anderson captured the Cup five straight times from 2013-2017.
In the spring of 2007 the Anderson-Erskine Cup was changed to the ‘Beville Cup.” The new name is in honor of Bobby and Susie Beville. Susie Beville was a graduate of Anderson Junior College and Erskine College where she played softball. Susie Beville passed away in the summer of 2004. Her husband Bobby played baseball at Anderson Junior College and Erskine College. Bobby served as the baseball coach at Anderson before becoming the athletics director for ten years. Bobby left Anderson in March of 2007 to work for the Anderson City Parks and Recreation Department.
“The name change to the Beville Cup was truly appropriate,” stated Erskine College Director of Athletics Mark Peeler. “No family quite represents the true passion of this rivalry like the Bevilles. It is an honor to compete every year for a cup named for two tremendous people who made such huge impacts on these two institutions.”
Each year, thirteen sports will be worth 1 point per contest with the exception of women's basketball which is worth a 1/2 point for the one game between the two schools. Additionally, 1.5 points will be awarded the school with the highest graduation rate/academic success rate and 1 point will be awarded fo the school that has the highest percentage of its student athletes (in these 13 sports) named as Conference Carolinas or South Atlantic Conference All-Academic.
